Date of Standardization

• Schematron became an ISO standard in 2006 (ISO Schematron)

Differences

• Up till now we have been learning Schematron, version 1.5
• Everything you've learned is applicable to ISO Schematron!
• ISO Schematron provides a number of new features, some of which we will see in the following tutorials.
• Upgrading your version 1.5 schemas is simply a matter of switching to the ISO Schematron namespace:
  • http://purl.oclc.org/dsdl/schematron
• Actually ... there is a difference: in ISO Schematron the pattern element does not have a name attribute. Instead use the id attribute.

ISO Schematron Schema

• This is the skeletal structure of all ISO Schematron schemas:

2. <sch:schema xmlns:sch="http://purl.oclc.org/dsdl/schematron">

Validators

• Oxygen XML version 8.2 supports ISO Schematron
• Topologi does not support ISO Schematron (as of May, 2007)
• There is an ISO Schematron stylesheet for dynamic validation (see later slides)

Example

• View check-classifications.sch (example08 folder).
• It is an ISO Schematron schema.
• Use Oxygen XML version 8.2 to validate valid-document.xml and invalid-document.xml (example08 folder) against the schema.
• Oxygen XML automatically recognizes that the schema referenced by an instance document is an ISO version. Oxygen XML seemlessly transitions between Schematron 1.5 and ISO Schematron. Nice!

Dynamic ISO Validation

• See the dynamic validation tutorial for an explanation of using a stylesheet to perform dynamic validation.
• There is an ISO Schematron stylesheet for performing dynamic validation:
  • iso_schematron_skeleton.xsl

Example

• View the example09 folder
• The DOS batch file, step1.bat, will invoke XALAN with check-classifications.sch and iso_schematron_skeleton.xsl and output the results to Validator.xsl
• The DOS batch file, step2.bat, will invoke XALAN with invalid-document.xml and Validator.xsl and output the results to Results.txt

Dynamic ISO Phased Validation

• iso_schematron_skeleton.xsl has a parameter -- phase -- that you can set for phased validation. Its default value is #ALL (all pattern elements are active).

Lab 8

• Copy the Schematron schema you created in Lab 1 to the Lab 8 folder, along with the XML instance documents.
• Modify your schema to be ISO-compliant.
• Validate the instance documents against the schema using Oxygen XML version 8.2
