Advantages of S5
- Any HTML-aware device can view it
- Roughly 1.5 billion devices
- It's standard's based (HTML)
- It's text
- Parseable by web crawlers, aggregators, spiders, and any text application
S5 vs Powerpoint
- S5 is standards-based; Powerpoint is proprietary
- S5 can be viewed on any platform; Powerpoint only Windows and Macintosh
- S5 is text; Powerpoint is binary
- S5 is Web-based; Powerpoint is desktop-based
- S5 can be processed by any text application; Powerpoint can only be processed by Microsoft applications
- S5 is free; Powerpoint costs $$$
S5 vs Powerpoint
- Using CSS, an S5 document can have a screen version and a print version;
With Powerpoint, stuff that's useful when viewed on a screen (e.g., links) are also displayed on print,
which is not useful
Disadvantage of S5
- It is "low level". That is, to effectively use it you must understand HTML and CSS
- Also, it isn't very good for long slide shows. Anything beyond, say, 35-40 slides and it takes
a long time for the initial load. I try to keep the size of my slide show to 25-30 slides.
